Biography

Gloucestershire flag
James Crandall was born in Gloucestershire, England.

James Crandall (or Crendall or Crandoll), son of Nicholas Crandall and Elizabeth _______ (possible maiden name Jones), was born about 1589 (under age in 1608 but probably of age in 1610), probably at Winterbourne, Gloucestershire.[1]

He was named in the administration of his brother John's estate in 1608. He may be the James, godson of James Crundall of Stoke Gifford, Gloucestershire, who was named in the elder James's will dated 7 Jun 1610.[1]

James is found in the records of Westerleigh between 1624 and 1649.[1]

He married first to Eleanor ________, who was buried 8 Jun 1618 (or 1619) at Westerleigh, and they had one son:[1]

  1. John, bap. 15 Feb 1617/8 at Westerleigh, likely the John Crandall who settled in Rhode Island.

He married second to Joan ________, who outlived her husband and was buried 20 Feb 1665/6 at Winterbourne, Gloucestershire, and they had a daughter:[1]

  1. Ann, bap. 30 Dec 1621.

James was buried 7 Oct 1662 at Winterbourne, Gloucestershire.[1] Attached Image Typed transcripts of parish registers are available through the incredibly kind efforts of Winterbourne Family History Online here [2]

Crandell-12 and Crandall-4 appear to represent the same person because: I BELIEVE THESE TWO ARE THE SAME. SPOUSES ARE THE SAME BUT LAST NAME SPELLING IS SLIGHTLY WRONG AND FIRST NAMES DON'T MATCH JOHN/JAMES

James Crandall never married Elizabeth Drake, and she wasn't the mother of his children. Please see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Crandall and https://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/RI_Ancestors/conversations/topics/4013
