Joseph Spencer (1681-1714) the son of William and Margaret (Bates) Spencer was born at Haddam, Conn; he was the grandson of Gerard Spencer a founder of Haddam. Joseph married Hannah [parents unnamed] and they had two children, Elizabeth born in 1711 and Joseph, Jr. born Jan 1712/13. Joseph died young (age 33) and Hannah married 2nd Purple-20|Richard Purple]]. At the time of her 2nd marriage she was known as Hannah Spencer and the marriage was recorded as “Richard Purple and Hannah Spencer ware Joyned in marrage September ye 20th 1717” [1] [2]. In his will Joseph Crane (1661-1707) of Wethersfield, mentions his wife and children including Hannah (Crane) Purple (born Aug 4, 1689) thus linking Joseph Spencer’s widow with the Crane family [3]

Not to be confused with: Hannah Spencer (1698-1733) the daughter of William and Sarah (Ackley) Spencer, born in East Haddam, Conn. She married Samuel Chapman of Colchester, who married 2nd Sarah Cahoon.[4]
