Private Jonathan Crane served with 3rd Connecticut Regiment (1777), Continental Army during the American Revolution.

Jonathan Crane was born August 20, 1757 at Mansfield, Connecticut. His parents were Ebenezer Crane and his wife Sarah Curtis. His grandfathers were John Crane and Jonathan Curtis. He had a step-mother whose name was Mary Neff from Wales, according to a grandson, Edmund Franklin Craine. It is possible that Jonathan's last three siblings were the children of Mary Neff, when their birth dates are considered.

Military Service in the Revolutionary War

Jonathan Craine enlisted May 6th and was discharged December 16, 1775. He was a private in 5th Co., Captain Thomas Knowlton of Ashford, 3rd Regiment Volunteers, with General Putnam. He served in and around Boston. He enlisted again on May 22, 1777 for three years and was discharged on May 22, 1780. This tour of duty he was a private in Captain Willis Clift's Company of Plainfield, 3rd Regiment, Connecticut Line, Colonel Samuel Wyllys, of Hartford. He served in New York and along the Hudson River, at Stony Point, and was in the raid on Danbury. He was also in the battle of Trenton. In 1819 he was granted a pension for his service.

Family and Dwellings

He married Sybil (Sibbel) Ranney, daughter of Elijah Ranney of Blandford, Massachusetts. Sibbel received land in Blandford from her father's estate which they sold on January 26, 1797 to Noah Warren of Blandford for $100.00. A short time later they moved to Chenango County, New York where Jonathan kept a hotel.

  7. Roxana was born in 1798 in Chenango County, New York.
  8. Rhoda was born in 1799 in Chenango County, New York and died in infancy.
  9. Jonathan was born June 18, 1801 in Plymouth, Chenango County, New York.
  10. Sybil Ann was born in 1803 in Plymouth, Chenango County, New York and died in May of 1835.
  11. Rachel was born June 4, 1805 at Plymouth, Chenango County, New York.

Death and Burial

Jonathan died in Plymouth, Chenango County, New York on April 13, 1820. Sybil died in 1842.
