The 1881 census shows John Joseph Crane and his wife Florence J Crane living at Upper Warwick Street, Toxteth Park, Liverpool, Lancashire. John is a wine and spirits merchant employing 2 boys. At that stage Florence would have been pregnant with Arthur Albert Crane as he is not in that census record. However John's 19 year old brother Arthur Albert Crane was living with them in that census and working with John as a wine and spirits merchant, which is probably why his nephew was named after him. [4] [5]

The 1891 census lists John Joseph Crane living in West Derby Road, West Derby, Lancashire in the ecclesiastical parish of St Margarets. He is 36 years old, married working as a Public House Manager, born in Lancashire about 1855. With him in the household are his wife Florence (32), and children: Evelyn (11), Arthur A (9), George A (7), Florence J (6), Elvina G (0) and a servant Georgina Dow (15). [6]

On 31 March 1901 John Joseph and his wife Florence were listed in the 1901 Census as living at West Derby Road, West Derby, Lancashire with their children Evelyn (21), George Alfred (17) Elvina G (10) and Florence J (16). John Joseph is a 46 year old Public House Manager and his wife is 42. Their name is misspelled as Craine. [7]

The 1911 census gives John Joseph Crane living in West Derby, Liverpool, Lancashire. He is married, 56 years old and a licensed victualler. He was born in Liverpool, Lancashire about 1855. Living with him are his wife Florence Crane (52, born Yeovil, Somerset) and daughters Evelyn (31, born Liverpool) and Elvina Gertrude Crane (20, born Liverpool). [8]

John J Crane's death was registered in Jan-Mar 1933 at West Derby, Lancashire. He was aged 78 and birth estimated at 78. (Vol 8B, page 906, line 2). [9]

Probate went to his widow Florence. Effects £2069 3s 10d. John Joseph Crane had been living at 20 Brookland Road, Liverpool when he died on 27 January 1933.[10]
