On the 1881 census, Isabella aged 14 years, is living with her widowed father at 11 Towers Street, Glasgow Kinning Park, along with her sister, Annie, aged 9 years. Their mother died of tuberculosis in 1878 so their grandmother, Mary (Moore) Crane, is living with them.[4]

Four of Walter and Isabella's sons fought in the First World War and their son, James, was killed in action at Ypres on 10 May 1915. James served with the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders and is commemorated on the Menin Gate Memorial.[9] The Second World War would claim the life of their grandson, Walter Burnside (son of John), who died in a flying accident on 29 June 1942, aged 19 years. He was a sergeant pilot with the Royal Canadian Air Force and based in England.[10]
On the 1921 census, Walter, a foundry labourer, and Isabella are living at 13 Granary Square, Grahamston, with their sons: John (22 years) and Robert (16 years). John is a labourer, while Robert is a moulder.[11]
