Biography

Stephen Crane [1][2][3] was born about 1630 or1635 in England.[4] It has been generally suggested that he was closely related to Jasper Crane, perhaps his son. But there is no confirmation.[5][6][4]

He arrived in New England and sources say he spent time in Connecticut before settling in New Jersey.

Stephen married by 1667, probably in New Jersey.

Stephen Crane was a founder of Elizabeth, New Jersey. He and his family were in Elizabethtown as early as 1666, which is the date of the origin of the town. He is listed among the "First-Lot Right Men" as being one of the Elizabethtown Associates as found in the "Elizabeth Book B" and reprinted in Church of the Founding Fathers of New Jersey, First Presbyterian Church 1664-1964. He was given a plot of land and house.[6][7][4]

Stephen Crane took the oath of allegiance to Charles II, and his successors Feb. 19, 1665/66.[8] Along with most of the Elizabethtown freeholders, he also swore allegiance to the Dutch when they retook New Jersey and the rest of the former New Netherlands in 1673. The territory was restored to England by treaty in 1674. The reinstated Governor accused the Associates of "treason" for their collaboration, but no charges were brought.[6]

His will is dated 1709. He bequeathed lands in Elizabeth Town to son John Crane. In 1710 he gave a deed to son, Nathaniel Crane, between Elizabeth Town and Newark, which was bounded by lands of John, Daniel, Jeremiah and Azariah Crane.[9]

Stephen died in 1710. He is buried in the Fairmount Cemetery, Newark, Essex County, New Jersey according to some researchers [10]

Children of Stephen Crane and his wife are:[11]

1. Jeremiah Crane ____–1742 [12]

2. John Crane Sr 1668–1723 [13]

3. Daniel Crane 1673–1723/24 [14]

4. Nathaniel Crane 1680–1755 [15]

Dates are uncertain, cf. Crane Genealogy.[4]

Notes

Stephen Crane was the ancestor of the Cranes in and about Elizabethtown and Westfield. John Crane first settled along the Passaic river and established a grist mill and saw mill in what was the Westfield area (now Cranford) around 1715. John Crane, had a daughter, Esther Crane, who married David Dunham b 1679 Woodbridge, NJ. [16]

Stephen's wife is listed as an unknown daughter of John and Jane (Bond) Ogden. Her given name is unknown. FindaGrave Memorial 153204118 at https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/153204118/stephen-crane. Note: It is not clear where she is so listed. John Ogden had a daughter who died in infancy in England, and a surviving daughter, Sarah (Ogden) Woodruff. There is no basis to suppose that Sarah married Crane or that there was another daughter.

Tradition says that Stephen married a Danish woman with red hair who came over on the Caledonia, that sunk in the Amboy harbor on the coast of New Jersey. [5] His wife’s identity is not known.

Various sources have Stephen Crane born 1635 in Worcester, England/or Guilford, New Haven, CT. He died 1710 in Elizabethown, New Jersey.

"The large number of persons, in this country, bearing the name of Crane, are generally the descendants of some one of the five families that were known as early as the year 1666...These five families are represented by ...Stephen, of Elizabethtown, [5]

"The fifth distinct family we find, is that of Stephen Crane, of Elizabethtown, N.J., who was in that town as early as 1666, which is the date of the origin of the town. According to Mr. Thomas O. Crane, of Perth Amboy, N.J., this Stephen married a Danish woman, and came over in the Caledonia, that sunk in the Amboy harbor. He was born about 1620, and his children were: - Jeremiah, John, Daniel, Nathaniel, and probably Azariah...[5]
