Biography

William Henry Crates was born in 1896 in Birmingham. He was the son of Albert Crates and Emily (White) Crates. His father had been born in Wales. His mother's name was given in the 1901 census as Louisa E, so may have been Louisa Emily.

William's father probably died between 1896 and 1901, because in the 1901 census William's mother was the head of household.

By March 31st 1901, the family were living in Bridge Street West, Birmingham. William (aged four) was the second youngest of eight children, all of whom had been born in Birmingham. The others were Clara (16), Albert (15), Arthur (14), Elsie (12), Henry (10), Jessie (8) and Louisa E (2). There was also a boarder, Mary James, aged 65 and not in paid employment. The three oldest children were working - Clara as a press worker, Albert as a brass polisher and Arthur as a rolling mill boy. No employment was listed for the mother.

By April 2nd 1911, the family was still in Birmingham. Emily was now working as a charwoman, and only five of her children were still in the household. There was a different boarder, William Moorwood, a sixteen-year-old errand boy. Harry, now 20, was working as a carter; Jessie, now 18, was a paper box maker; William, now 15, was an errand boy; and Emily, now twelve, was still in school.

On August 2nd 1920, William married Rachel Heyes in Toronto, Canada. She was from Haydock in Lancashire originally. They were married by an Anglican clergyman. William was 24 and working as a harness maker. He lived at 5 Redwood Avenue Toronto. Rachel was 21 and an electric fixture worker; she lived at 16 Mystric Avenue, Scarborough. Neither had been married before. The witnesses were Thomas Harper (of 156 Rhodes Avenue) and Elsie Ellis (of 5 Redwood Avenue).
