Born on 12 February 1763, Charles Gregan Craufurd was the second son of Sir Alexander Craufurd, 1st Bt., of Newark in Ayrshire and his wife, Jane Crokatt, daughter of James Crokatt of Luxborough in Essex. He was educated at Harrow 1776. Charles joined the army as a cornet in the 1st Dragoon Guards in 1778, was promoted lieutenant in 1781 and captain in the 2nd Dragoon Guards in 1783. In 1787 he was appointed equerry to the Duke of York and was the Duke's aide-de-camp in Flanders. He was severely wounded at the Battle of Amberg in September 1796 and returned home in 1798.
On 7 February 1800, he married Lady Anna Maria Stanhope, dowager Duchess of Newcastle, daughter of William Stanhope, Earl of Harrington, and his wife, Caroline Fitzroy and widow of Thomas Pelham Clinton, Duke of Newcastle. No children were born in the marriage. With his wife's influence he was returned to Parliament as member for East Retford in 1806.
He was made a Knight Grand Cross of the Order of the Bath on 27 May 1820. Charles died on 26 March 1821aged 58.
