Biography

Matthew was born on 22 June 1855 in Charlton, Georgia, USA. He was the son of Gideon Crawford and Mary Frances (Tomlin) Crawford.[1]

On 26 June 1860 Matthew (age 5) was living in Pierce, Georgia, USA. Note: 332nd dwelling, 322nd family: Gideon Crofford, 23, farmer; real estate 0, personal property 0. Mary, 21. Susan, 3. Thomas, 1. All born in Georgia.[2]

When Matthew was 25 he married Delilah Batten on 25 June 1880. The couple had 8 children: James Noah Crawford, Gideon Crawford, Andrew S Crawford, Robert Newton Crawford, Frances Melissa Crawford, Katherine Crawford, Joseph Lawton Crawford and Rosa Crawford. Note: 6th house & family: Gideon Crawford, 46; farmer, literate. Frances, 50, illiterate. Mathew, 23, farm laborer, attended school, cannot write. Elvira, 21, attended school, cannot write. John, 19, farm laborer, attended school, cannot write. Lucretia, 17, attended school, cannot write. Daniel B, 14, attended school, cannot write. James Howard, 10, hired, illiterate. Matthew died at the age of 80 on 26 January 1936 in Lawtey, Bradford, Florida, USA.[3]
