John was born in Derrylane, County Cavan, Ireland in 1808. He married Catherine Luby in 1830. He immigrated to Australia in 1842 aboard the Nabob. [1]
His ship record says he could read and write, and was Protestant. The family arrived on 21 February 1842 with wife Catherine and children Jane and William.
"Shipping Intelligence .... Feb 20. - From Liverpool, via Cape of Good Hope, having left the former place September 9th, and the latter December 29th, the barque Nabob, 503 tons, Captain Wilson, with sundries, and 218 emigrants, under the superintendence of J. Winpenny, and F. H. Faulding, Esqs., surgeons. Passengers - Mr. Macdonald, Miss Macdonald, Master Macdonald, Mr. Wright, Mr. Morris Marks, Mrs. Rose, Master, Buchanan, and six intermediate passengers." There were 17 deaths during the voyage from various illnesses.
John and Catherine had six children together - two boys and four girls. Only one son, William, lived to any great age. John worked as an ironmonger in Sydney.
John died in Sydney in 1889. [2] [3]
