Biography

Jane Crawford was born in Ireland, and daughter of John and Jane Crawford. She married Thomas Abbott and they had two children, John Crawford and Anna by the time they emigrated to Canada. They were in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island for the birth of their daughter Jane, in 1819. The family had moved on to Chatham, New Brunswick by the early 1820s, where their children Elizabeth 1, Elizabeth 2, and Thomas were born; there were two other children of Thomas and Jane baptized in the same church, Bellinda and Hugh, but no further records were found for them.

According to the New Brunswick baptism records, Thomas Abbott was a lumberman, a labourer, and a farmer by 1830.[1]

The daughter Elizabeth who died at 1 year was buried in the graveyard at St. Pauls, but there were no other Abbotts in that cemetery.

Daughter Anna married Joseph Burchill in 1834, and John Crawford married Mary Ann Horton[2]; Jane married Andrew Woodside in 1839. Thomas Abbott Sr. was not a witness at the marriages of Elizabeth, Anna, John Crawford, or Jane.

Baptismal records show that daughters Anna and Jane were in New Brunswick until 1843, and in New York State from about 1845 onwards. Thomas Jr. went to New York as well. John and Mary Ann Abbott were living in Prince Edward Island from about 1845- 1851. But by the time of the 1861 census of New Brunswick, John and his family were back in Newcastle.

I was unable to find Thomas or Jane in the 1851 New Brunswick census; however, this is an incomplete census. They might have gone to Prince Edward Island with their son John. Thomas could have died anywhere: New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, New York...

Jane Abbott Woodside and her family were living in Davenport, Iowa at the time of the 1856 Iowa census. Anna Abbott Burchill had died in Iowa in 1855. By 1860, Anna's widower Joseph Burchill, along with their surviving children and mother-in-law Jane Crawford Abbott were recorded in Iowa. It is assumed that Thomas Abbott Sr. had died before 1860.

In 1867, Jane was living with her daughter Jane Woodside in Davenport. She returned to New York, where she was living with her son Thomas and his wife Mary in 1870 and 1880.

Jane Crawford Abbott died in Manhattan, New York in 1885 at the age of 92. Her address at the time of her death was 3082 or 3083 3rd Street. [3]. Her son John Crawford Abbott died in New Brunswick on June 23, 1888. Thomas Jr. died in New York on May 21, 1889 at the age of 66.

When Elizabeth Abbott McArthur died in Prince Edward Island in 1905, her obituary said "Her near surviving relatives are a sister, Mrs. Woodside of Denver, Colorado". [4] No death notice was found for Jane Abbott Woodside, and it is assumed she died not long after her sister.
