Biography

Calvin was born in 1823. The following was written by our cousin, Treva Wells-Majors for his biography on another genealogy website:

"Calvin had red hair!

"Calvin & Jane were married by Charles W. Martin-Minister !Applied for license 24 Feb 1844 as found in Marriages book at the Fulton !County Courthouse in Lewiston, IL Book 8 Page 4." (Info supplied by Margie Morrow, Molalla, Oregon.)

The following is from the Wells Family History, supplied by Marie Crompton-Wells, Treva's and Randy's aunt:

"HISTORY: "Calvin Joshua Crawford was born 15 June, 1823, at Morrow, Fulton County, Ohio. According to legend, at age seven, he was carried off by a tribe of Indians. He had flaming red hair which attracted the Chief, who wished Calvin to be his son-in-law.

"Ten years later (1840) a white man saw him and recognized him as the Crawford boy. The chief allowed him to return to his family, as the Chief realized that Calvin did not wish to live the life of an Indian. He was even given his Indian pony!"
