"The following obituary appeared in "The Punxsutawney Spirit" (Punxsutawney, PA) on Wednesday, September 7, 1904:
"A. J. T. CRAWFORD DEAD.
"Expired Yesterday at the Home of His Daughter, in Pittsburg.
"A. J. T. Crawford, Esq., of Covode, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. M. D. Shields, of Pittsburg, on Tuesday, September 5 [sic--the 6th was Tuesday], at 10:30 o'clock, in the eighty-fifth year of his age. He had been in his usual health until about one week previous to his death, when there was a complete collapse of his vital powers.
"The remains will be brought to Covode, and the funeral will take place in the Presbyterian Church of that place on Thursday at 11 o'clock a. m., Rev. Warnshuis, of Covode, officiating.
"The deceased was born on a farm in East Mahoning [sic] Township, Indiana County, August 20 [sic], 1819. He began teaching school when seventeen years of age, after which he was engaged in farming and dealing in live stock.
"Mr. Crawford was married March 9, 1843, to Emily Sprankle, who preceded him to the tomb about four [sic] years ago. Three children survive them, namely: Rev. F. Swartz Crawford, of Indiana, Pa.; Mrs. Henry Peffer, of Covode, and Mrs. M. D. Shields, of Pittsburg.
"The deceased was a man of superior intelligence and character. His father having died when he was but twelve years of age, and being the oldest of a family of seven, the care and support of the household fell on him, early developing the qualities of industry and self-reliance. He was always held in the highest esteem by his neighbors, having served as justice of the peace of North Mahoning Township for twenty-five years, and as elder in the Presbyterian Church at Covode for forty years."
