Minnie was born in February about 1870 in New York.
She was the daughter of Sarah and Civil War veteran Joshua Crawford of the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, the first regiment in the United States to enlist men of color during the war.
Minnie's sister Augusta worked as a servant in the household of Euclid and Sonora Anderson. Mrs. Anderson opened a school of music in Peekskill, New York. Assuming the school was not segregated, perhaps she was a teacher there?
