James was born about 1780. He was born during a volatile period in Ayr, during the American Revolution, with grain shortages resulting from the war effort.[1]
Marriage and Children
He married Mary Campbell in 1811, in Ayr, Ayrshire.[2][3] He was employed as a tidewaiter[4] in Ayr, responsible for overseeing the loading and unloading of goods.

It is unclear when James died, but it is interesting to note that the town of Ayr experienced a serious epidemic of Cholera in 1831.[7]
