Porter Worth Crawford was born on February 25, 1845 in Seville, Medina, Ohio, United States, son of James Crawford (1808–1884) and Amy Elder (1813–1893).
In 1860, Porter (15) was living in Guilford Township, Medina. [1]
Porter was mustered as part of the 166th Ohio Infantry (National Guard) , Union forces, from 02 May 1864 to 09 Sep 1864 to defend Washington, D.C., where he served as a Corporal in Company F.
In 1870, Porter (25) was living in Living with Thomas Crawford (Merchant) where Porter was a "Clerk in Store".[1]
Porter (25) married Ella G Foskett (18) (born on April 4, 1852 in Lafayette, Medina; daughter of Fordyce Dresser Foskett and Lydia Jane (Phillips) Foskett) on October 19, 1870 in Medina.[2] [3] [4] [5] [6]Their children were:
In 1900, Porter (55) was living in ED 41 Guilford Township Seville village, Medina.[1]
In 1910, Porter (65) was living in Guilford, Medina.[1]
In 1930, Porter (85) was living in Westfield, Medina.[1]
Porter was the last surviving Civil War veteran in Seville and would routinely give speeches on July 4th in memoriam. [7]
Porter died on June 11, 1932 in Westfield, Medina, aged 87. He was buried in Mound Hill Cemetery, Seville, Ohio.
Census records place Porter with Ella in 1910, but do not find him in 1920 records (Ella passed in 1919). By 1930 at age 85 he was living with his daughter Amy Lydia (Crawford) Dowd (1882-1960) and son-in-law Charles Augustus Dowd (1881-1958).
Hester Murray (1874-1954) (first cousin to Porter), in 1940, places date of birth as 2/25/1845[8], death certificate places date of birth as 10/25/1845. Death certificate is 8 years sooner than the collected information from Hester Murray, and was reported by "Mrs. Charles Dowd", indicating daughter Amy Lydia (Crawford) Dowd (1882-1960), with whom Porter had been living since his wife's death in 1919. However, after consulting with Craig Dowd and his review of other records including Amy Lydia (Crawford) Dowd 's diary, it is clear they celebrated Porter's birthday on February 25th. Therefore, the death certificate birth date (although reported by Amy Lydia (Crawford) Dowd (1882-1960)) is incorrect, and February 25th is the correct birthdate.
