James was born in 1853 in Tower Hamlets in the east end of London. His parents are William and Susan and William is listed on his baptism records as an Engineer.
in 1861 the family is living in Limehouse, Tower Hamlets and father William is listed as being a blacksmith and having been born in Glasgow, Scotland. James in the youngest of the children at home, only being 8, the oldest daughter Janet is 22
10 years later in 1871 there are few children left at the family home in Mile End Old Town. James' father is again listed as an Engineer, his brother Robert is a 'sweep' and James is a Fishmonger
One year after that James marries Amelia Priscilla Morris in Hackney. He is a General Dealer and his father is an engineer. James and Jesse Morris are witnesses.
In 1881 the family are living in Bridge Street, Mile End Old Town, London with their 2 young daughters and James' parents William and Susan, now in their 70's. James is a Greengrocer. It has not been possible to locate James and Amelia in the 1891 census, their daughters are working or with relatives in London and James' mother, Susan is living with her daughter Janet and her family. james' daughter Harriet has moved in there as well.
James' Wife Amelia dies aged just 39 in 1893 and James himself passes away aged 48 in 1901 in Poplar.
