Item Details: {Photograph} SIR EDMUND HERRING, Lieutenant-Governor, and Nurses Marie Durnan (left) and Mary Morrow looking at a sketch of the proposed new building when the Mercy Public Maternity Hospital Building Appeal was launched yesterday. LIEUT-GOVERNOR'S APPEAL. Last night Sir Edmund Herding issued the following statement: "Some short time ago my attention was directed to the efforts of a group of Melbourne citizens who were working to build a new maternity hospital to serve the mothers of this State. This afternoon I had the pleasure of opening the appeal 'to the public at a meeting in the Melbourne Town Hall. I have been fully apprised of the nature of the proposed public hospital, to be known as the Mercy Public Maternity Hospital, and I wish to heartily endorse this appeal and to recommend to the sympathetic notice of the people of this State the fine work being carried out by the civic-minded citizens who are implementing this most laudable idea.
I feel sure that anything which the public can do to help in this campaign to provide further facilities for the mothers and new Australians of this community is a contribution to national welfare which can result in nothing but good to all. I have pleasure In endorsing the work of all those who are striving-to make this new hospital a reality."[11] .
