The Very Rev. Dr. Angus McDonald Crawford was the son of Angus Crawford and Isabella Eliza Lawrie. He attended Victoria College at Coburg and Kingston University, Kingston, Ontario. He graduated with and B.A. and M.A. from the University of Toronto. He later was a student of theology at Princeton University and the Philadelphia Divinity School. In 1880 he married Susan Brown. They had four children.
He was ordained to the priesthood of the Episcopal Church by Bishop Scarborough of New Jersey and studied Semitic language at Yale University. He received a Doctor of Divinity from Roanoke College in Virginia. He served as Rector of Trinity Parish in Mount Holly, New Jersey. In 1887 he became Professor of Semitic Languages at the Virginia Theological Seminary. In 1899 he was elected Dean of that institution, a position he held until he retired in 1920. He was Dean Emeritus of the Virginia Theological Seminary.
