Biography

William Harris Crawford was a partner in legal practice with John Dandridge Bibb in Georgia. John named a son of his William Crawford Bibb and William named a son of his William Bibb Crawford.

Crawford was involved in two duels, killing one man.[1]

He served as United States Secretary of War from 1815 to 1816 and United States Secretary of the Treasury from 1816 to 1825, and was a candidate for President of the United States in 1824.[2] [3]

    • The first duel he shot Peter L. Van Alen on July 31st at 11am in 1802 (Peter died 38 hours later)
    • The second duel occurred at a later date against a different opponent which left his wrist injured as it had been shot
    • Supported Thomas Jefferson for President

  • Supported the creation of a United States Bank

  • He declined the nomination but still received 54 votes out of 119 in the House of Representatives
  • Became Secretary of the Treasury of the United States where he served until 1825

  • Nominated and accepted a run for President of the United States in which he carried: Virginia, Georgia and partial votes from Delaware, New York and Maryland

  • Returned to Georgia and became a circuit judge

  • Died 15 Sep 1834 in Oglethorpe, Georgia
