Isabella Crawford, whose name variously appears as Isabelle, Isabell, Bell, Bella, and Della was born a slave. I am not certain if her last name is from her father or from her previous slave owner. On the census forms she is listed as black when she is quite young, later as a mulatto, and then as an adult she is listed as white, as I find that most of my family is also. (But we are racially mixed. Her husband, my Great Grandfather was also racially mixed. My Nixon's came originally from England, but by this generation they were also part Native American and African American.[1]
