John Crawford was born at Providence, Rhode Island, in August of 1693, a son of Scots emigrant Gideon Crawford and Freelove (Fenner) Crawford -- a granddaughter of one of Rhode Island's earliest settlers, Richard Waterman. John married Amey Whipple in mid-December of 1715; the marriage however lasted just a little over two years, as John died in March of 1718. His widow was remarried in 1723 to Robert Gibbs.
