Biography

Born 24 Feb 1842. Rockingham County, Virginia, USA.[1]

21 Aug 1850 Amanda is listed living on a farm with her parents and six siblings in District #30, Lewis County, Virginia.[2]

1861/1865 Amanda's husband sereves in the Civil War as a soldier of Company G of the 6th Regiment West Virginia Infantry.[5][6]

1869/1870 Amanda and her family move from Virginia to Nebraska probably sometime between the end of 1869 and the beginning of 1870. Her obituary mentions them moving to Saunders County, Nebraska in 1871, but they were already in Cass County, Nebraska Jul 1970[7]

1907 Amanda's husband Benjamin dies. He is buried at the Mount Pleasant Cemetery in Petersburg, Boone County, Nebraska.[12] As his widow, Amanda receives Veteran's pension after his death.[13][14]

18 Apr 1910 Amanda is renting a home in the Village of Petersburg, Oakland, Boone County, Nebraska.[15] She is living by herself and receives pension.

Also a son-in-law and a grandson (grandson-in-law and great-grandson for Amanda). If I am reading it right Mattie's husband works as a Millroom leader?, two of her girls work at a bank and the son-in-law is a traffic officer for the police.

Death Calls Aged Nebraska Pioneer Woman Mrs. Amanda Orendorff passed away early Sunday morning at the home of her son, I. M. Orendorff, at the advanced age of 90 years, 2 months and 11 days. A short service, conducted by Rev. Chas. M. Wilson, was held Tuesday morning at 10:00 o'clock at the home of her daughter, Mrs. O. W. Dixon, after which the remains, accompanied by relatives and friends, were taken to, Petersburg, Nebraska, for burial beside her husband who passed away twenty-six years ago. At Petersburg funeral services were held in the Congregational church conducted by Rev. J. A. Deuken, a Seven Day Adventist minister of which church Mrs. Orendorff, who was a woman of strong religious convictions, was a member. Amanda Crawford was born in Rockingham county, Virginia, on February 24, 1842. She was united in marriage to Benjamin F. Orendorff on October 27, 1858. In 1871 they came to Nebraska and took up a homestead in Saunders county, taking their place among the little band of brave pioneers of that time. Here they endured the hardships Imposed by blizzards, grasshopper raids, prairie fires and the privations incident to pioneer life. In 1899 they moved to Grand Island where the husband passed away in 1907. Most of the time since then she has made her home with her children. She has been an invalid for the past six years. Mrs. Orendorff was the mother of twelve children, six of who survive. They are Mrs. O. W. Dixon and I. M. Orendorff of North Bend, Mrs. A. R. Barns of Loretlo, C. C. Oerndorff of Albion, Mrs. C. S. Crabtree of Grand Island, and John Orendorff of Woodland, California. Besides these she is survived by forty-two grand children, fifty-two great 'grand children, and one great, great grandchild.
