Clarence River Advocate (NSW : 1898 - 1949), Friday 1 February 1901. [3] The Late Mr. J. A. Creagh. The late Mr. J. A. Creagh, whose death we announced in our last issue, was a native of Limerick, Ireland, and was in his 61 st year. He was a son of the late Captain Jasper Creagh, of the 86th regiment, and came to the colony with his parents at an early age. The family settled on the Manning, where for several years Mr. J. A. Creagh filled the position of Police Magistrate, having a high reputation for honor and probity. On his appointment to Grafton in 1896 he was given a flattering send-off by the residents of the Manning. His position here was embittered by unfriendly relations with a solicitor. Complaints made of his decisions and conduct brought about an inquiry over a year ago before Judge Gibson. Mr. Creagh was completely exonerated, but it is the opinion of his friends that the worry and mental strain attendant one the complaints and inquiry were prejudicial to his health. Over six months ago dropsical swellings compelled him to relinquish his duties. Under medical treatment, change, and rest he improved for a time, but suffered a relapse and died on Sunday evening last. He leaves a widow, two sons, and four daughters Mrs. Q. Leith, Mrs. A. Lobban, Miss Creagh, Miss Q. Creagh, and Messrs. J. S. Creagh (of the Justice Department), and O. Creagh.
