Biography

Maria Barbara "Barbary" Crecelius was christened 24 March 1767 in the Evangelical Lutheran Church at Frederick, Maryland.[1]

No marriage record has been found, and her father's will, drawn on 7 June 1787, doesn't specify whether she was single or married at that time. [2]. Probably she married George Kindle in the late 1780s, as their first child, William, was born about 1790.

Barbary Kindle appears on the Washington Co. tax list for the last time in 1806, when she owned 150 acres. Only a partial tax list survives from 1807, and neither Barbara Kindle nor Joseph Harmon is on it; but in 1808, Joseph - who in previous years had no taxable land - has acquired 150 acres, and Barbary Kindle has disappeared. [3] Based on this, it seems safe to assume that Joseph and Barbara were married sometime between 1806 and 1808. There were probably no children from this second marriage; if there had been, they should still have been in their parents' household in 1820.

Barbary and Joseph, along with her children, sold their land in March 1814, probably just before their departure for Indiana Territory. The deed of sale identifies the sellers as the heirs of George Kindle: "Joseph Harmon and Barbary Harmon his wife, formerly the wife of George Kindle Dec'd; Jno. P Clingan and his wife Marget [sic] Clingan formerly Marget Kindle daughter of sd George dec'd; and William Kindle the son of sd George Kindle dec'd." Witnesses were Thomas Finch, Leonard Calvert, and Emanuel Lamon. [4]

Joseph died before June 23, 1838, when his will was probated in Harrison County (Indiana). Barbary was his executor (executrix) and sole heir.[5]

Barbary Harmon does not appear on the 1840 census, but it's possible that she was living in someone else's household.
