Biography

Jesse Crenshaw was the son of Thomas and Christian Crenshaw of Lunenburg County, Virginia [now United States].[1]

His date of birth is estimated as about 1760. No source has been identified for this date. It would be after about 1750 based on parents ages. He is listed in his father's will dated 13 Sept 1786, and named as one of the executors so would have been born before 1766.[1] (Note that a different Jesse Crenshaw was born on 11 Sept 1755.)

Jesse Crenshaw and Mary, his wife, of Lunenburg County, signed deed of land to John Pettus in Oct 1791.[2]

Jesse Crenshaw and Mary, his wife, of Lunenburg County, signed deed of land to Thomas Crenshaw in Apr 1793.[3]

Jesse Crenshaw of Lunenburg County, signed deed of land to Idm [?] Roberts in 1798.[4]

Jesse Crenshaw and Henry Haley of Lunenburg County, are identified as executors for Mathew Crenshaw in his 1800 will.[5] And as executors of the estate of Mathew Crenshaw, they deeded land to Daniel Crenshaw in 1803.[6]

Jesse Crenshaw married Jane C Blanton on 14 Jan 1805 in Lunenburg County, Virginia.[7]

J Crenshaw is listed in the 1810 US census as living in Pendleton, South Carolina. His household consisted of one male under 10, one male 10-15, two males 16-25 and one male 26-44 (himself, so born 1766-1784), and two slaves.[8]

Jesse Crenshaw [Chrensham] Senior is listed in the 1820 US census as living in Pendleton, South Carolina. His household consisted of two males 16-25, one male 45 and over (himself, so born before 1775), and three female slaves.[9]

Another Jesse Crenshave [Chrenshaw] is listed in the 1820 US census in Pendleton, South Carolina. His household consisted of three males under 10, one male 26-44 (himself, so born 1776-1796), two females under 10, and one female 26-44. One person was a foreigner not naturalized.[10] This is assumed to be his son; the two records are not listed close together on census records.

Jesse Crenshaw wrote his will on 14 Nov 1827 in Pendleton District, South Carolina, United States. The will was proved on 16 Nov 1829.[11]

His children named in his will were:[11]

  • Nathaniel
  • Anderson
  • Jesse
  • Stephen
  • Matthew
  • Grief

No wife or daughters are identified in 1810 census, 1820 census or his will. (One might speculate that the mother died in childbirth with the last son named Grief.)

Research Notes

There is no direct evidence that the Jesse Crenshaw born and lived in Lunenburg County, Virginia from about 1760 to 1805, is the same as the Jesse Crenshaw living in Pendleton district, South Carolina from about 1810 to 1829. These locations are about 600 km apart. However there is no identified record for Jesse Crenshaw in Virginia after 1805, nor for Jesse Crenshaw in South Carolina earlier than 1810. It is provisionally assumed here that these are the same person.

This Jesse Crenshaw is confused in some family trees with Jesse Crenshaw of Georgia, United States.
