Archibald was born in 1864 the son of John Crerar Helen McPherson McDonald. Archibald was counted in censuses in 1911 and 1921 in Cambuslang, Lanarkshire along with his wife and children. Archibald was a saddler. For many years he was secretary of the Glasgow and West of Scotland Master Saddlers' Association . He died in July 1945 while on holiday visiting his son John in Aberdeen.
Archibald was married twice. With his 1st wife Maggie Hewitt he had two children and the family is counted in the 1901 census in Govan. She died in 1902 and Archibald then married Jessie Smith in 1905 and they had six children, including two sets of twins. The family is counted in the 1911 and 1921 census in Cambuslang, Lanark.
