Sylvester the Third, a Roman, son of one Lawrence, was substituted into the room of Benedict when he was expelled, but held it not long, for after nine and forty days Benedict was restored by his own faction. ...
Sylvester, who, being Cardinal of Sabina, was made Pope, not by the College of Cardinals, for that had been tolerable, but merely by simony, as some write, and soon after justly deposed.
He was bishop of Sabina and elected as pope in January 1045 to replace Benedict IX after considerable infighting and took the name Sylvester III. Benedict IX excommunicated him, and returned to Rome in March, expelling Sylvester. Sylvester returned to Sabina to resume the office of Bishop of Sabina.[2]
Despite being deprived of his bishopric and priesthood at the Council of Sutri he continue to function as such as was recognized as Bishop of Sabina until at least 1062.[2]
