Biography

U.S. Southern Colonies Project logo
David Crew was a Virginia colonist.

David Crew was born about 1706, in Charles City County, Virginia. He was the son of John Crew and Sarah Gatley. He married first, Mary Stanley, daughter of John Stanley and Alice Ballard. The couple had at least six children

Marriage

Marriage: before 9 Nov 1733, at Hanover County, Virginia
Wife: Mary Stanley
Child: Elizabeth Crew

Children

  • Elizabeth Crews
  • John Crews
  • Stanley Crews m. Agatha/Agnes
  • David Milton Crews (2 Mar 1740-2 Nov 1821) m. Annie Magee (abt 1740-)
  • Gideon D. Crews (1742-1790) m. Anna McQueen (-)
  • Jesse Crews (1754-1812) married Amy Bright. Both died Madison Co, KY.

Mary Stanley Crew may have died due to childbirth complications with her last child. This profile tells the death date of Mary and the remarriage date of David to his next wife as the same, 7 Sept 1754. That is highly doubtful. There is alot of confusion over when David married Mary McGahea and if you look at the Quaker meeting indexes, you can see why.

There are multiple notations of David's second marriage; 1 Sept 1753, 7 Sep 1754 and 4 Aug 1754, calling Mary McGahea, a daughter of Samuel, but also a relict of Samuel. The most likely date would be 4 AUG 1754 IF the death date of his first wife is to be believed. If Mary Stanley Crew died during, or shortly after childbirth, then finding a new wife/mother would be very important.

He passed away 11 April 1762 in Charles City, Charles City County, Virginia.

MARR 9 NOV 1733.

Research Notes

It appears that Mary Ladd married first, Samuel McGahea and they had at least a daughter Elizabeth b c 1733 who died Aug 1770. More research is needed, but maybe Mary Ladd, relict of Samuel McGahea, is the woman who married David Crew after the death of his first wife. More research is needed for details on Samuel McGahea and his other children.

Another piece of the puzzle is the marriage of Mary Ladd McGahea, widow of Samuel, and David Crew took place at her mother's home, Huldah Binford Ladd, during a monthly meeting.

In my tree I have David Crew (245) and Mary Stanley (3609) as parents of Mary Polly Crews (721) Ballou. Her parents came from another reseacher. I was able to confirm his other information on the Crews and Ballou/Ballew families but not the parents of Mary. The information I was given also included children David Milton, Elizabeth, and Stanley. Is anyone aware of documentation confirming Mary was the child of this David Crew?

Crew-747 and Crew-28 appear to represent the same person because: Same birth date and location. Same death location and close enough date. Same father. Same brother. Same wife. And the one child of Crew-747 belongs with siblings under Crew-28. Yeah, they are clear duplicates!

I have set Crew-143 and Crew-28 as unnerved matches until his father's duplicate profiles are merged.
