Being the eldest, Louise had the chore of getting up early and starting the fire in the kitchen stove. This was two fold in purpose - one was so the embers would not die down so that a constant cooking temperature was reached in the stove by the time her mother was up and ready to cook breakfast for the family; and, two, to start adding some heat to the home in the harsh Pittsburgh winters. On the morning of 26 January 1930, Louise started the fire as usual, but an ember jumped out catching her night gown afire. Instead of dropping and rolling, she became frightened and ran. The flames quickly enveloped her entire body, severely burning her. She was nursed in bed as best as possible for three days. It seemed she was slowly recovering from the shock and might well recover from the burns. On the evening of 29 January, she told her mother she "could hear the children singing hymns". Then, she passed away early on the morning of 30 Jan 1930.
