Biography

Virginia Crews was born in March 1835 according to the Census of 1850 when she was living with her family in Jacksonville Florida. .^[1]

She married Oscar Hart in 1850 when she was 15 years of age. Oscar was a son of ID Hart, and listed as a lawyer. He was about 16 years older than Virginia at the time of the marriage. ^[2]

NOTE: The 1860 Census in Lake City, Florida originally in this biography has been removed. Virginia was living in Jacksonville with her husband Oscar and recorded on the 1860 census in Duval County Florida.

In the 1860 census, she and Oscar are living in Duval, Florida. ^[3]

Sometime between 1860 and 1867, Oscar and Virginia must have divorced. The couple had no children. Virginia, who was in her 30s, married George Wells. Her biography at her memorial states that she married under the surname Bassett but no marriage record exists for a marriage with said Bassett.

George Wells died of consumption according to the Find-A-Grave memorial.

By 1870, Virginia Wells, is living with her brother and his family, whose names are now spelled "Cruse" rather than "Crews." ^[4]

In 1910, she is 72, widowed and living in a boarding house in Jacksonville. This census reveals that Virginia had one child who is no longer living. No details given. ^[5]

She passed away in 1911 and is memorialized at the Old City Cemetery in Jacksonville Florida. The memorial notes her marriage to Oscar Hart and George M. Wells but is not helpful as far as other details.
