David was born about 1812, as an enslaved person in the household of Gideon Crews in Granville, North Carolina.

Inventory of the estate of Gideon Crews, 6 Dec 1815 included 5 Negroes: Andrew 56 years, Nanny 47, Pleasant 45, Davy 3, and Yancy 2.^[1]

Sale of the estate of Gideon Crews on 7 Dec 1815 included:

Negro Man Andrew to Wm. H. Clay for £150-1-0;

Negro Pleasant & Child (likely, Yancy) to Jas. Crews for £90-19-0;

Negro child David to Lemuel Currin for £65-3-0;
