James came to Western Australia on the Joshua Carroll, arriving on 2 November 1836.[1]
He was the Colonial Surgeon from March 1836-1843 and a medical officer with the 51st Regiment stationed in the colony from 1840-1847.[1]
James visited India per Champion on 18 June 1842 returning by the same ship.[1]

MARRIED At Perth, on Tuesday, the 6th instant, by the Rev. J. B. Wittenoom, Colonial Chaplain, JAMES CRICHTON, Esq., M.D., Colonial Surgeon, to MATILDA, youngest daughter of the late CAPT. W. H. SOUPER, 1st Royals.[2]
His wife died three days after their marriage and james was granted 18 months leave of absence and departed for England on 26 January 1843 per Trusty.[1]
