Henry George Louis Crichton son of John Crichton and his wife, Selina Beresford, was born in Ireland on 7 April 1844. [1] He joined the 10th Hussars in 1868 and transferred to the 21st in 1874. [2]
He married Letitia Grace Cole-Hamilton daughter of Arthur Cole-Hamilton and his wife, Emilia Beresford on 17 Aug 1869. [3] [4]
In 1881 Henry bought Netley Castle (a fort built by Henry VIII to defend Southampton Water) [5] and worshipped at St Mary the Virgin, Hound. He decided that the growing settlement around Netley Abbey needed a nearer church and on land above the abbey ruins he built the church of St Edward the Confessor, Netley. Largely funded by his father, the Earl of Erne [6] it was built from the designs of architect John Dando Sedding in 1886. [7]
Letitia died on 13 Jan 1888 and two years later Henry married Jane Emma Baring, [8]daughter of Thomas Baring of Micheldever in Hampshire and his wife, Elizabeth Sturt.
Colonel the Honourable Sir Henry George Louis Crichton died on 10 May 1922. [9] His death was registered at South Stoneham. [10]
