Biography

"Daniel Cripe was born in Pennsylvania April 6, 1772. [He married Magdalena Miller about 1796.] They lived a short time in Maryland, Kentucky, then in Ohio. He became a minister [to the German Baptist Brethren community] with three of his brothers as deacons, viz. : John, Joseph and Samuel. They were charter members of the Lower Miami Church [OH] when organized and also of the Wolf Creek division in 1811. Daniel Cripe was the Presiding Elder of this church until 1828 when he moved to northern Indiana, ..." (Historical Committee 1921, p 420)

"He, with his family, ... came [to Elkhart IN] in 1829. Daniel Cripe was a man of medium height, was broad shoul dered and well muscled ; his face was smooth shaven and his complexion light. Being of kindly disposition he made many friends and commanded the love and respect of all who knew him. He selected for himself about a half section [320 acres] of land on Elkhart Prairie, about two miles south of where the present Goshen courthouse stands! He at once erected a log cabin upon it and made other preparations for a future home. He with his friends constructed a rude plow ... according to tradition, he was the first white settler to plow a furrow on Elkhart Prairie." (Winger 1917 pp 325-326, quoting Opperman)

"In 1830 Elder Cripe ... began preaching to these pioneer families, preaching largely in German. A church was organized about 1832. He was the first elder and minister. ... Elder Cripe was not so able as a preacher, judged by the standards of today, but he had great influence among his people by his godly life among them" (Winger, p 326).

In 1850 Daniel was 77, with estimated birth year of 1773, birthplace listed as Pennsylvania was living in Indiana with his son Emanuel's family. [1]

FindAGrave page lists John Greib 1744-1814 and Elizabeth Reach 1753-1815 as Daniel's parents. In addition there are two profiles for Barbara Shideler, which are a pending match. They should be merged whether Barbara is Daniel's mother or not.
