Biography

  • Daughter of Merrill Bray Crisp and Maleitha "Melethy: Ramsey. She was born in an Indian hut in Stecoah, Cherokee County, NC (which is present day Graham County). She was the first white child born in Stecoah Valley.
  • BURIAL; Hazie Brown Cemetery, Stecoah, Graham County, North Carolina, USA
  • It is not known if she was married to Tillman Cody or Jack Slaughter; she is listed on the Census with her children, William and Amanda with all three of their names being Crisp in 1870 and 1880; I do see a record of her marriage to Samuel Hall though. Last name when she died was Loving or or Lovin.

First child with Tillman Cody William Cody (name is William Crisp on some records; his death certificate names his father). Born 1863

Second with Jack Slaughter (according to daughter's death record): Amanda Slaughter/Crisp born 1866

Third with Samuel "Sam" Hall who was born in TN, was 3 years younger than Avaline according to their marriage record; and died before 1880 as she is listed on the 1880 census as widowed (Not believed to be the same Samuel Hall who married Trull and died in Alabama as that one lived many years longer):

Avaline and Sam Hall were married in Stecoah, Graham County, NC on March 12, 1876; both were residents of Graham County at the time of the marriage. Their children were:

James Garrison "Jim" Crisp (1872-1940) Modena Hall Vandora "Dora" Crisp (1866-1923).

On the 1920 Census, Avaline was living in Buncombe County, NC with her daughter, Dora and Dora's husband and granddaughter. She was listed as age 80 and her last name was "Loving" (Lovin?) "Evaline Loving"

On the 1930 Federal Census, she is living with her daughter Dora in , Graham County, NC. she is listed as RA Lovin age 88, born in NC.

Avaline died on April 26, 1931 in Cheoah, Graham County, NC.
