Mary was born about 1625 to Rev. Tobias Crisp and Mary Wilson.
In the Bodleian Library Dr Rawlinson's MSS Collection is a manuscript written by Samuel Crisp, brother to Mary Carleton:
"Among Dr Rawlinson's MSS in the Bodleian is a life a Mrs. Mary Carleton by Samuel Crisp. The aforesaid was daughter of Dr. Crisp and Mary Wilson. In 1647 she married Mr. John Carleton, a merchant adventurer, with whom she lived upwards of 23 years, bearing to him 17 children. She died Jan. 29, 1670"
"The Life and character of Mrs Mary Carleton, daughter of Dr. Tobias Crisp by his wife Mrs Mary Wilson (afterwards Mrs. Rowe), and granddaughter of Lady Pye, who died 29 Jan 1670. Written by her brother Samuel Crisp.
She lived after her marriage in 1647 first in Holland, and then at Wallington, Addington and Cheam in Surrey. Mention is made of two other brothers, Ellis and Tobias Crisp, of two sisters, - Marlow and _ Crisp of Wimbleden, and of a sister-in-law of the writer, Margaret Pheasant.
The MS is apparently an unfinished and often incorrectly written transcript, ending with the words, "Before I conclude, shall only make a few observations, and by way of emprovement finish the discourse."
Mr Carlton and Mary Crispe the grandchild of Mr. Rowland Wilson Esquire married 25 May 1647 [1]
