The daughter of William Crittenden and Rosetta Morgan, Adeline Crittenden was born in Saline Township, Michigan,[citation needed] in 1866, residing there with her family..[1][2] Addie did not marry, however, she is listed as a widow on the 1880 census in her father's household, under her maiden name, likely an error by the census enumerator.

Addie attended a rural Saline school and Macon High School, and was graduated from the State Normal College at Ypsilanti, graduating in the Class of 1888. After teaching school for a number of years, she took classes at Cleary's Business College in Ypsilanti and became a bookkeeper for a Detroit business firm.[3]

The last illness of her mother made the resignation of that position necessary and, after the death of her mother, Addie returned home to keep house for her father and brother, and she did that for as long as they lived.[4] By 1920, Addie and her father, then 81 years old, lived with her brother, Schuyler Crittenden, residing in Macon Township, Michigan.[5]

Addie's father passed away in 1924 and Addie remained in her brother's Macon Township household.[6] Her brother died in March of 1938;[7] afterward, Addie did secretarial work for Dr. James Breakey in Ypsilanti and kept up her Macon home. She was visiting with her friend, Wilma Everest, in Ionia, at the time of the 1940 census, and was enumerated in her household that year.[8]

Addie Crittenden passed away in Tecumseh Township, Michigan[9] at the age of 80[3] and is buried in the family plot at Macon Cemetery in Macon Township, Michigan.[10]
