JERRY CRITTENDEN.
A familiar figure in Edgerton for many years, Uncle Jerry Crittenden, died at his home in this city on Friday last at the age of 71 years. Jeremiah Crittenden was born in Sussex, England, January 22d, 1828. He was married in 1850 and in August 1871 emigrated to America and settled first on a farm in Rock County. Fifteen years ago he sold his farm and came to Edgerton. For a term of 11 years he was nightwatchman in this city and in this capacity rendered faithful and satisfactory services. The people of our city learned to know that while they slept the town was carefully watched over while Uncle Jerry was on duty. The old gentleman had a heart in him as large as his robust frame, and the children all learned to love him. A few years ago a cancerous affection began to trouble him and became later a serious affliction. He submitted to two or three operations that afforded temporary relief but the disease would soon crop out in another place and later diffused itself through his entire system. However, a week or so before his death he was feeling much better than usual and through the contracting of a severe cold brought on a complication of old troubles hastened his death. A faithful wife who has been his helpmate for nearly a half century, and a son, George Crittenden, survive. Funeral services took place from the Congregational church Sunday afternoon, Rev. Moore officiating and interment was made in Fassett cemetery[1].
