Alice, wife of David, was born September 26, 1673[1]. She has a rather interesting history. The Croasdales came as passengers with William Penn in the ship Welcome. Robert Greenway, master, in 1682. During the passage, the small -pox made its appearance in great virulence and occasioned much distress, disease. It is related that Wiliam Penn cheered the dying and the survivors with his Godly conversation during the memorable voyage. One of the passengers writing of the voyage says. "The good conversation of William Penn was very advantageous to all the company. HIs singular care was manifested in contributing to the necessities of many who were sick of the small-pox then on board, of which about thirty died." The date of her death has not been discovered. but she probably died before the marriage of her daughter Potts-632 to Cleaver-170 on 4 October, 1722. This inference is based on the observation that the Quaker wedding certificate for the Peter Cleaver, Jr.- Elizabeth wedding refers to Elizabeth as the daughter of David and Allice Potts of the Township of Bristol in the County of Philadelphia, but Alice's signature does not appear alongside her husband's among the witnesses[2]. Immediately below the signature David Potts are the signatures of her brothers Thomas, Jonas, and John. In addition, it appears that she likely predeceased her husband because he does not mention her is his will. David Potts' will was made Nov. 13, 1730, and proven Nov. 26, 1730; it is on file in the Register's Office at Philadelphia, and recorded in Will Book E, at page 142.
