Biography

Archibald Crockett was born about 1732, in Ireland. Archibald is the son of Robert Crockett who died in Augusta County, Virginia prior to 19th of February 1747. Archibald is listed by his father Robert Crockett as being one of the individuals Robert imported from Ireland to Philadelphia and thence into Virginia.[1]

Archibald Crockett was a minor when the court in Augusta County, Virginia on the 28th of November 1751, placed Archibald under guardianship of Robert Bratton and James McCorkle. Sureties were James Lockhart and John Henderson.[2]

Archibald Crockett was living in Augusta County, Virginia on the 28th of November, 1751 when Archibald Crockett appeared in Augusta County Virginia court and "chose Robert Bratton and James McCorkle guardians. . . guardians complain that John Ramsey, who married Margaret, relict of Robert Crockett, father of Archibald are wasting the estate." On the 21st of May 1752 Archibald Crockett was still under guardianship in Augusta County, Virginia as "Robert Bratton, guardian of Archibald Crockett, against Robert Davis and Margaret Ramsey for detaining part of orphan's estate - order to summon". This lawsuit was filed by Archibald's guardian. [3]

Archibald Crockett is found in the Waxhaw District (Anson County, North Caroliina) as early as 1755, being adjacent to William King on the N. side of the Catawba River. Archibald Crockett married Mary Ann King, daughter of Col. William King.

Archibald Crockett is a legatee in the 1788 Mecklenburg County, North Carolina will of William King, who calls him "son" (son-in-law) and gives Archibald a child's portion of his estate.[4]

Archibald appears in the 1790 Federal census in Mecklenburg Co., North Carolina. His household is listed as follows: 1 male under 16; 4 males 16 and over; 5 females; and 2 slaves.[5]

Archibald appears in the 1800 Federal census in Mecklenburg Co., North Carolina. His household is listed as follows: 1 male 16 thru 25; 1 male 45 and over; 1 female 10 thru 15; 1 female 16 thru 25; 1 female 26 thru 44; 1 female 45 and over; and 5 slaves.[6]

Archibald made his last will and testament on the 3rd day of January, 1804; and his will reads in part with original spelling: "In the Name of God Amen. I Archibald Crockett of the county of Mecklingburgh in State of North Carolina being in perfect mind and memory . . . do make & ordain this my Last Will and Testament . . . For the Executors of my Estate I do appoint my son John and Samuel Downs Dated this 3 of January 1804 signed Archibald Crockett. Testors: Eli Crockett & Elias Crockett.[7]

Research Notes

Archibald was a minor who had a guardian appointed for him in 1751. His father stated that the family arrived in the summer of 1730. Made estimate of birth date based on that, pending further research.

Note: Eli Crockett is not named as a son of Archibald in his will. BOTH Eli AND Elias were testators to his will. They married sisters Ann Morrow and Martha "Patsy" Morrow, who are BOTH mentioned in their parents' wills. Confused with each other often. Elias is the son of Archibald. Eli Crockett could be a nephew (??).

Archibald Crockett is listed most frequently on the Ancestry family trees as having married Elizabeth Hedge in 1749 in Greene County, North Carolina. Archibald Crockett born about 1732 was never married to Elizabeth Hedge in 1749 in Greene County, North Carolina. In 1749 Archibald Crockett would have been about 17 years of age and it is known from Augusta County Virginia court records that in 1751 Archibald Crockett was living in Augusta County, Virginia and that on the 28th of November, 1751 Archibald Crockett appeared in Augusta County Virginia court and "chose Robert Bratton and James McCorkle guardians. . . guardians complain that John Ramsey, who married Margaret, relict of Robert Crockett, father of Archibald are wasting the estate." On the 21st of May 1752 Archibald Crockett was still under guardianship in Augusta County, Virginia as "Robert Bratton, guardian of Archibald Crockett, against Robert Davis and Margaret Ramsey for detaining part of orphan's estate - order to summon" See: Augusta County Court Orders, Order Book 3, page 211 and 254; Also found in Chronicles of the Scotch-Irish Settlement in Virginia Extracted from the Original Court Records of Augusta County 1745-1800 by Lyman Chalkley, Volume 1, pages 49 and 51.

It is known that Archibald Crockett was in Waxhaw District (Anson County), North Carolina by 1755 and was living next to William King. Archibald married William King's daughter Mary Ann King. William King names Archibald in his will which is dated 1788.

There is a marriage record for an Archibald Crockett in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina in January 1792 to a Deborah Wilson. However, there is no way to know if this is the Archibald Crockett who was born about 1732 or another Archibald Crockett. Archibald Crockett did not name a wife in his will so IF he was the Archibald who married Deborah Wilson she was deceased by the time he made his will in 1804 and they had no children as no minor children are named in his will.

The only wife currently listed on Archibald Crockett's (Crockett-375) profile is the wife that has been proven with records.

Crockett-306 and Crockett-394 do not represent the same person because: I do not believe these are the same person, they have different parents and different spouses.
