His family moved from New York to Iowa in the mid-1850s.[1][2]
As a young man, William served in the army during the Civil War. He was a member of Company D, Iowa 15th Infantry between Oct 1864 and Jul 1865.[3]
After the war, William married the widowed Almeda Crandall in Iowa on 29 Sep 1866.[4]
They lived in Buffalo, Buchanan, Iowa in 1870 with his step-children Dwight (15) and Monette (12), and a baby, Mary (1).[5]
In 1880, they are still living in Buffalo, with a growing family that includes:

Minnie (9),
John A (7),
and Delila (0)[6]
In 1900, William and Almeda are still living in Buffalo.[7]
By 1905, William and A.M. Crofoot moved to Grant, Sedgwick, Kansas.[8]Where Almeda passed away in 1907.[9]
The following year, in Dec 1908, William married Mariah Belle Ross.[10], but by 1910, they are living separately in different parts of Wichita.[11]
William married the widow, Alice Crane Curtis, on 1 May 1919 in Hazleton, Iowa,[12] where he can be found living with Alice and her son, Bruce Vargason[13]
He married again in 1921, to Harriet Campbell Jewell[14], who was his wife[15] when he passed away in 1927[16]
