Banns of Marriage were read on December 11th, 18th and 25th 1927, for Frederick George Croft, Bachelor of the Parish of Christ Church Albany Street, and Eva Louisa Coulstock of this Parish (All Hallows Barking by the Tower). Similar Banns were published in the Parish of Christ Church, Albany Street.
On 1 January 1928, Frederick George Croft, 22 year old Bachelor soldier of Albany Street Barracks, his father Thomas Croft Gardener, married Eva Louisa Coulstock, 21 year old spinster of 16 Burward St. E.C3, her father Ernest Coulstock, Painter deceased, at the Parish Church in the Parish of All Hollows Barking in the City of London, England[3]. The marriage was registered in the London City district[4].
A Free BMD search indicates one child with the family name Croft and mothers birth name Coulstock were born between 1927 and 1940, Rodney G Croft in 1933[5].
On 24 March 1933, a newspaper article reports on the motor cycle accident by Frederick George Croft of Croft Cottage Etchingham.
"MOTOR CYCLIST INJURED.—An accident occurred on the Hurst Green-Etchingham road Wednesday night at about six o'clock. Mr. Frederick George Croft, of The Croft Cottage. Etchingham. was driving a motor cycle towards Etchingnam, and on rounding a sharp right-band bend near the top of Bugsell-lane the machine left the road and mounted the kerb. It dived down a steep bank into a shaw and overturned. Mr. Croft sustained a fractured thigh and was removed to the Royal East Sussex Hospital, where was detained."[6]
Frederick G Croft, born 10 June 1905, Married but no spouse or family residing with him, is recorded twice in the 1939 England and Wales Register. Firstly at Ham Manor Estate Keepers House with occupation Agricultural Labourer which is struck out and notation "See Page 9 BL2" added[7]. Secondly at Ham Monor Estate as Agricultural Labourer[8].
Newspaper articles in the Worthing Gazette and West Sussex Gazette in Ocotober 1939 identify Frederick George Croft as game-keeper in the employ of Frederick Wilcox, who owned the shooting rights over Ham Manor Farm[9].
Frederick Croft, born 10 June 1905, has his death recorded in the Hastings and Rother district in January 1985[10].
Research Notes
Unsourced Ancestry family trees only have two sons, Rodney as above and suggest a son Alan Jeffrey Croft born 1935, died 2002 in Perth, Australia, as the son of Frederick and Eva, or alternatively as the son of Victor Leslie Hawke and Eva (therefore born Alan Hawke). I cannot locate any Frederick Eva birth in the Free BDM index but there is a registration for Alan J Hawke, mother Croft[11].
This, if true, would suggest a birth out of marriage and presumably a separation prior to 1935.
National Archives of Australia do have records of the immigration of Alan Jeffrey Croft born 13 January 1935, wife Nora and children Margaret and Martin emigrating to Australia in 1967[12].
Some Wikitreer with more knowledge of this family or who can access better sources would need to clarify this.
