Biography

Ruth Agnus Croft was born in 1894 in Texas to Frank Croft and Sarah Ann Davis. In 1900, she was living in Gainesville, Cooke, TX with her parents. In 1910, the family had moved to Causey, Roosevelt, NM. By 1920, she was married to Archie Merrick and they lived in Causey, Roosevelt, NM with children George and Maree. Archie's mother, Mattie, was widowed and living there also. Archie was a farmer. Of note, Ruth's brothers, William and Henry P. Croft lived on either side of them. In 1930, Ruth and Archie remained in Causey, Roosevelt, NM but they rent their farm now. They had children George A, Annie M, niece, Louzelle Crabb, and Archie's mother Mattie E. living with them. It lists Ruth's age at her first marriage as 21 and Archie's as 20. Ruth's father, Frank and his wife Helen L. lived next to them with brother, Pete H. and wife, Gertrude living next to Frank. They each owned their farms. Brother, William and wife, Ira S. was 2 doors down.

Cornelius Funeral Services Are Held Funeral services for Mrs. Ruth Cornelius were held this afternoon at Causey, NM, with Rev. C.A. Lorts, pastor of the First Christian Church of Clovis, officiating. Pallbearers were J.D. Garner, A.A. Killian, Buel Hardin, Elmer Cheek, Cass Lyons and Len Carter. The body was taken overland from the N.S. Griggs and Sons Funeral Chapel this morning to Causey. Mrs. Cornelius, wife of Fred Cornelius, died Monday morning in a local hospital. She was 45 years old. She was a member of the First Christian Church and the Rebekah Lodge. Her husband has been in the grocery business in Amarillo for many years. The family home is at 1400 North East Eighth Avenue. Survivors, other than the husband, include one son, George Merrick Cornelius of Rogers, N.M.; a daughter Mrs. Elmer Pruitt of Elida, N.M; three brothers, Frank Croft of Oklahoma City and William and Pete Croft of Rogers; and a sister, Mrs. Fred Culver of Healdton, Okla. Burial is in the Causey Cemetery, under the direction of N.B. Griggs and sons.
