Biography

Jane was born in 1862 on the Bandirran Estate, Perthshire, Scotland.

She was named after Lady Jane Drummond, mistress of Bandirran Estate who Jane's grandfather, Alexander was a favorite of.

We are lucky in 1956 farsighted descendant's of Jane recorded her account of her life at 95 years of age and her Cromb family emigration to New Zealand . This has been transcribed into a very special WikiTree profile page - click here to read [1]

Sadly, Janes father contracted influenza in 1876 and died after a week. After that it was hard for Jane, mother Jessie and her brothers and sisters. Through a neighbour who had a grandson in New Zealand and after reading his correspondence the family started thinking about emigrating. Jane the family eldest, at 22 years of age travelled out on her own in the SS Doric in 1884.

This was to become a highly successful venture and she was soon joined by the eldest boy, Alexander, then in 1887 the rest of the family sailed out in the S S Kaikoura.

She was much loved by her granddaughters Sheila, whose middle name was also Drummond, and Judy Robertson for her cheerfulness and friendliness. Great grand daughter Judy remembers visiting her at a rest home in Dunedin where she helped her fellow residents with their flowers and pot plants. [1]

She passed away in 1961, just short of her centenary. She is buried with James in Eastern Cemetery Invercargill . [2]
