DEATH NOTICE. CROMBIE. William David, of Maranthona. Longreach. — On 24th February, at Merinda St., Greenslopes,
OBITUARY. MR. W. D. CROMBIE. Mr. William David Crombie of Maranthona, Longreach, but recently of Glenlong, Merinda Street, Greenslopes, Brisbane, passed away there yesterday, after an illness which has extended over the last few months. He was aged 66 years, and was one of the best known and most highly respected graziers in the Longreach district, having owned and controlled Maranthona since 1911. The late Mr. Crombie came to the Central West in 1901, and his pastoral life commenced as a jackeroo on Greenhills and Kensington Downs, these properties being owned by his relatives, the Crombles and Camerons respectively. He was subsequently overseer on Greenhills, and in 1911, with his three sisters, took up Maranthona, which was a resumption of Greenhills, and which had been unselected for some time following its resumption from that leasehold. Later the late Mr. Crombie acquired sole rights in Maranthona, which he retained till his death. He was active in the conduct and management of Maranthona till a few months ago, when ill-health compelled his retirement from the more arduous duties of pastoral work. As a member of the Longreach Shire Council for over 20 years, the late Mr. Crombie played a full share in administering to the civic needs of the town and district, his principles of life and business ensuring that all questions would be considered from one angle only—that of the ultimate benefit of the community he was serving. He shunned any publicity whatever, preferring to carry on his work in his own unobstrusive but careful and efficient manner. In 1913 he married Miss Janet Wilmina Macdonald of Brisbane, and she, with two sons and two daughters, Mr. Mac. Crombie (Bimerah, Longreach), Dr. Alister Crombie, Doctor of Philosophy and a research scientist at Cambridge University; Mrs. Nancy Macdonald (Peachester), and Mrs. Margaret Bell (Brisbane), survive him.
