Biography

Mary (Cromer) Brightbill has German Roots.

Mary, daughter of John Cromer and Katie Grove,[1] was born 17 February 1912 in York County, Pennsylvania, where she grew up.[2] In 1920 the family residing in Franklintown, York County, consisted of her parents John C. (age 60, farmer) and Catharine A. (51), Mary C. (7), her sister Edna Rebecca "Becky" (16), nephew John W. Johe (3) and her maternal grandmother Elizabeth Grove (71).[2] By 1930, only Mary C. (18) remained at home in Franklintown with her parents John (age 71, farmer) and Katie A. (62).[3]

In 1935, Mary had moved away from the home where she was raised to Boiling Springs, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania,[4] but she returned to help her aging parents before the next census. By 1940 Mary C. (28) was working as a waitress in a restaurant and lived at home in Dillsburg, York County, with her parents John (age 81) and Katie A. (72).[4]

Little further has been uncovered for Mary. She was still unmarried in 1942,[5] when her father died,[5] but shown as Mrs. Brightbill when her brother George died in 1950.[6]

Her husband Vernon E. Brightbill died in 1980[7] and Mary in 1997.[8] They are buried together at Dillsburg Cemetery in Dillsburg.[8][9]
