He was an associate of Lawrence Hargrave (who built flying machines and who was remembered on the Australian $20 note) on an ill-fated gold expedition to New Guinea (they never reached there, the ship being wrecked on the Great Barrier reef). Over the years he was variously a gold prospector, jackeroo, and drover. George's wife's (Frances Emily Dawson, 1855-1940) family memoirs were published in 1966.[3]
George Whiting Crommelin died at Bombala, New South Wales, on the 7th of May 1905, and was buried there.[4][5]
