Biography

Flag of Huntingdonshire (adopted 2009)
Robert Cromwell MP was born in Huntingdonshire, England.

Robert Cromwell was the second son of Henry Cromwell and his first wife Joan Warren[1][2][3][4]. He was born about 1565 in Huntingdonshire, there is no confirmed record of the exact date[4].

In about 1592 he married Elizabeth Stewart of Ely in Cambridgeshire. Ely lies about 20 miles east of Huntingdon in the fen country. Their first child, Elizabeth, was born in October 1593 in Huntingdon. They went on to have six daughters and three sons. Of the sons, only Oliver lived to adulthood.

He served as an MP for Huntingdon in the 1593 Parliament[4], while his brother, Oliver, represented Huntingdonshire. Unlike his brother, he never repeated the experience. He was appointed a J.P. for Huntingdon in 1598 and bailiff for the town in 1600[3].

On his father's death in 1604, Robert was left a small estate with an annual income of about £300[5].

Robert Cromwell

He died in 1617, leaving his 18-year old son, Oliver, with the responsibility for the family, including the six unmarried sisters. His will was proved at the Prerogative Court of Canterbury on 8 August 1617. [6]

Hello Tina - the England Project will be added to this profile as Project manager to merge away this profile created as a duplicate of Robert Cromwell, the father of Oliver Cromwell. Please add reliable primary sources to verify the existence of the daughter Catherine currently attached.

Thanks, Jo, England Project Managed Profiles coordinator

Hello PMs, the England Project would like to co-manage and protect this profile due to the significance of the Cromwell family. Any proposed changes can be posted as profile comments (with sources), so they can be discussed by all interested parties. Cheers, Elizabeth - England Project Leader
Hi Coral,

Please do not add back the middle name for this person, or change the birthdate unless you can provide reliable sources as to why they should be changed. The Cromwells are a very tricky family and great care needs to be taken with all the associated profiles, which is why sources are so important. Cheers, Elizabeth - England Project Leader

You have no sources, please add those that supported the fact that the name was Cromwell Williams

Robert Cromwell already had a well sourced profile and this is a duplicate. Please check carefully before adding profiles particularly pre 1700 ones, you must have an accurate source and check there isn’t a profile already. If you are dealing with Early English profiles then it would be a good idea to join the England Project and do the Orphan Trails which will teach you how to find records for English profiles. You can sign up on a G2G post, sorry I don’t have a link.

I have Richard Ingoldsby married Elizabeth Cromwell, dau. of godfather and uncle of Oliver (Protector). I didn't think his name was Robert. Could you check? Thanks. Marnie

Hi Marnie,

The Elizabeth you are looking for is Robert's niece (daughter of his older brother, Sir Oliver): https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Cromwell-138 Elizabeth was hence the first cousin of Oliver Cromwell, the Lord Protector.
