Elizabeth Crooks was born in North Carolina on 23 August 1785 and died 26 January 1870 (aged 84) in Audrain, Missouri. She was buried at Mount Pisgah Cemetery in Mexico, Audrain County, Missouri. [1]

She married William Turner, son of Thomas Turner and Catherine Smith, on 28 June 1803 in Madison County, Kentucky, in a ceremony performed by John Pace.[2]

Over the next 27 years, fourteen children were born in Madison County to William Turner and Elizabeth Crooks:

  1. Mary "Polly" Ann Turner, about 1804–1897
  2. Thomas Turner, about 1805–
  3. John Turner, about 1807–1898
  4. Lucinda Turner, about 1808–
  5. James C Turner, about 1810–1899
  6. Ellender "Ellen"" Turner, 1811–1890
  7. Sarah "Sallie" Ann Turner, about 1813–1890

In 1850 Elizabeth, 65 and William, 72 are found residing in Boone county, Boone, Missouri. South Carolina is listed as Elizabeth's birthplace. [3]

In 1860, both Elizabeth and William were living in Rocky Fork Township, Boone, Missouri, United States in the household of their youngest daughter Narcissa Nancy Turner and her husband Taylor Henderson Hulen. The 1860 census lists North Carolina as Elizabeth's birthplace.[4]

Elizabeth passed away in January of 1870 just before the U.S. Census was taken. After her death we find William, 92 living in the household of his son Samuel in Salt River, Audrain, Missouri, United States. [5] William passed away at the impressive age of 98 0n September 7, 1876, in Mexico, Audrain, Missouri, United States. He was laid to rest near his wife Elizabeth at Mount Pisgah Cemetery in Audrain County, Missouri, United States.

Research Notes

Elizabeth's parentage is unknown. She is not the daughter of Absalom Crook (abt.1742-1806) as mentioned in her FindaGrave memorial ID 223548611. Absalom Crook, who was born 1742 Prince George's, Maryland, did have a daughter named Elizabeth Crook (abt.1785-1866) but she married Charles Hardwick (abt.1775-1844) in Madison County on 26 March 1804 [6] In addition, Absalom granted his consent to the marriage of his daughter and Charles Hardwick in a handwritten note dated March 24 1804. It was signed by four witnesses. Image is attached to Elizabeth Crook (abt.1785-1866) Wikitree profile - Crook-1042

The identity of William and Elizabeth's son, Silas, has been confused with the Silas Turner who was born in Virginia in 1798 and died 1 Feb 1872 (aged 73) in Andrew County, Missouri. Silas, born 1798, has been inadvertently inserted in the Find A Grave Memorials of William Turner, his wife Elizabeth Crooks Turner, and their children. Their son Silas was actually born in 1831 in Kentucky.

William and Elizabeth married in 1803 when Elizabeth was 17 years old. In 1798 she was 13 years old. It doesn't seem likely that the Silas born in Virginia in 1798 is their son. All William and Elizabeth's children were born in Madison, Kentucky. Silas Turner (Silas-14809) born in Kentucky in 1831 is more likely their son. In addition, the names of his children correspond with the William Turner family names. His first two children were named William and Elizabeth after his parents. His daughter Lucinda, was named after his sister Lucinda and son Squire is the name of his uncle who was named after Squire Boone.

The parents' confirmed with DNA relationship status indicators were removed because the DNA confirmations are not cited. (DB errors 213 & 313)

Please see this article for more information and guidance on how to provide the proper source documentation when confirming genealogy with DNA on WikiTree.

Thank you.

P.S., As it states in the Help for Confirmed with DNA:

"If there isn't a proper source citation the "Confirmed with DNA" relationship status should be removed (by you or another member)."
